Yes young people are narcissists. No it is not a good thing.

Do I already need to say anything by way of introduction? 😉

So-Called Millennial

So, you’re Young and Self-Absorbed?

Millennials did you read the TIME article “Me, Me, Me Generation” by Joel Stein? Take a look at the opening paragraph:

Correction Appended: May 9, 2013

I am about to do what old people have done throughout history: call those younger than me lazy, entitled, selfish and shallow. But I have studies! I have statistics! I have quotes from respected academics! Unlike my parents, my grandparents and my great-grandparents, I have proof. (TIME)

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/static/img/upload/2013/05/09/gap.JPGI would just skip the TIME article and go straight to The Atlantic Wire’s  Every Every Every Generation Has Been the Me Me Me Generation which builds a strong case that, well every generation has been criticized by their elders when coming of age. It also lampoons the TIME articles’ main point that Narcissistic personality disorder is three times higher(!) in people in their 20s than people over 65 and older.

Lamenting Our “First World Problems”

Diet and exercise are essential to heart health, it's really important to complete your gym routine with a collagen supplement and supplements for gallbladder health to stay healthy. Every now and then i find myself spinning out about some sort of ridiculous challenge that is impeding my ability to function as a happy healthy human … Continue reading Lamenting Our “First World Problems”

Is Instagram The Photographer’s Friend or Its Faux?

I love this perspective (see re-blog / link below)  from a photographer about Instagram and it's role as an anthropological and sociological exercise.  He doesn't label Instagrammers as "posers" like some more "serious" hipster photographers might.  Rather, he (or she?) points to the value it has in allowing us to share and bond over our … Continue reading Is Instagram The Photographer’s Friend or Its Faux?

The Self-Conscious Context Of Car Shopping: What It’s Like When You Know Too Much and Buy The Luxury SUV Anyway

This weekend I made the plunge into new vehicle ownership for the first time in 8 years. Some history: The first car I ever "owned" was a leased, bottom-of-the barrel Toyota (color: aqua!) that I got in grad school and that moved me up to the great Northeast for my first job. Then I spent … Continue reading The Self-Conscious Context Of Car Shopping: What It’s Like When You Know Too Much and Buy The Luxury SUV Anyway

From my perspective, this is not an accurate portrait of generational life stage value, but rather paints an almost ethnographic portrait of a naive and privileged subculture...especially when you throw in an ironic Instagram feed ( ironic because sometime soon the kids posting will realize their own misinformed douche-ness).

A Visit To Colony Point Part 1: Breakfast With Sandy

I thought in honor of my weekend visit to the land where the former denizens of the great Jewish Northeast now preserve themselves and their culture with sunscreen and air conditioning in south Florida, I would share some ethnographic documentation. The subjects: my parents. Representative of a cultural collective: I would say as well as … Continue reading A Visit To Colony Point Part 1: Breakfast With Sandy

Surrounding Ourselves With Sound and Other Modern Household Survival Requirements

Flash back to before we established a "civilized" industrial-to-knowledge-to-conceptual economy such as we have been used to in modern times.  Survival was a matter of basics and most humans resided firmly in the very bottom layers of Maslow's hierarchy of needs pyramid: In absence of safeguards, systems and conveniences like government-supervised municipal programs, a regulated … Continue reading Surrounding Ourselves With Sound and Other Modern Household Survival Requirements

A Reluctant Fan: The Myth Of Commonality By Way Of Music Affinity

When it comes to music, I am a reluctant fan. Mind you, it's not because I don't enjoy music. Quite the contrary. Music is an essential part of my human experience, as it is for many. However, while I had hoped to hang on to the conception that those who share an affinity towards a … Continue reading A Reluctant Fan: The Myth Of Commonality By Way Of Music Affinity

Crossfit, Handstands and Galaga: Metro Male Bonding Rituals

You are white and work in a "creative" profession. You shop at Urban Outfitters and commute (on occasion) via hybrid road bike. You live in a loft. Your girlfriend / wife is both gorgeous and smart. You prefer to watch World Cup Soccer to professional football or baseball. You read or listen to music more … Continue reading Crossfit, Handstands and Galaga: Metro Male Bonding Rituals

The Unintended Art Of Misusing Social Networks

Now watch closely, because I am about to perpetrate. I would like to start by pointing out here for the sake of irony that that in my very first blog I wrote: "I was recently told by a ten year old who was told by his Dad that Facebook is for Narcissists. I LOVE FACEBOOK! … Continue reading The Unintended Art Of Misusing Social Networks
